8 Things You Didn't Know About Stephen Graham
Stephen Graham is one of those actors you probably recognise from a few things and think “yeah, he’s good”, but it’s not until you look at his acting credits and range of characters that you start thinking he could actually be one of the most impressive actors the UK has to offer.
Celebrating his 44th birthday today, August 3rd, you’d be forgiven for being surprised at just how many things he has been in over the years. His most famous role is probably as Combo in Shane Meadows This is England and following series’, but having also been in the likes of Boardwalk Empire, Pirate of the Caribbean, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Awaydays, Gangs of New York and Snatch he has worked with some of the biggest names in the world and more than held his own.
Born in Kirkby, Lancashire in 1973 Stephan Graham has quietly established himself as one of our most important actors that has a number of years in front of him to create some more memorable works.
We thought we would try to find some interesting facts that you might not know about him and have learned quite a few things ourselves in the process.
While the character Stephen Graham played in This is England is often thought of as being nothing more than a narrow-minded racist, the character is, in fact, a lot more complex. Like Graham himself, who has a Jamaican Grandfather, Combo is mixed race and his frustrations boil down to abandonment issues and culminate in a violently jealous rage at Milky’s seemingly ‘perfect family life’.
He’s not the only talented actor in his family. Stephen Graham is the brother of actor Aston Kelly who featured in Dream Team, Emmerdale and award-winning short Dog Altogether.
As if having an actor for a brother wasn’t enough Stephan Graham is also married to one! Hannah Walters, who was also in This is England is his other half. She played Trudy in This is England who pretty much stole every scene she was in from the helpful shop assistant selling Shaun his first pair of boots to her bigger role in the following series.
Stephen Graham suffers from severe dyslexia. He hasn’t let it hold him back and is a great role model for anyone that suffers from dyslexia as he continues to impress in Film and TV.
He has appeared in a number of music videos as well including Deadmau5, Arctic Monkeys, Babybird, The Virginmarys, Travis and Kasabian.
He almost killed Leonardo Di Caprio. Well, that might be stretching it but he did convince him to the pull the handbrake on a golf cart as he spun the wheel because he thought you couldn’t tip a golf cart. You can and he did.
Stephen Graham is an ambassador for Stand Up To Cancer, that’s right, despite being extremely busy jetting around the world he still finds the time to do what he can for the charity.
Stephen’s friends are better than yours. Tom Hardy, Leonardo Di Caprio, Johnny Depp, Martin Scorsese, we will stop there because it’s just getting embarrassing for you now.
