Andrew Ellis on This is England, Tom Hanks & Punching Sloths

If you are a fan of Shane Meadows’ This Is England you will recognise Andrew Ellis straight away. Coming to our attention as the lovable Gadget in 2007’s cult classic, he we have been lucky enough to see how his character has developed in the follow up This Is England ’86, ’88 and ’90.

Ellis was spotted by casting director Michelle Smith while acting in High School and was encouraged to audition for some projects. One of those projects was This Is England.

With his birthday coming up on July 24th we thought we would take the opportunity to ask him a few questions about what he’s been up to and what he sees for the future of the This is England franchise.

PN – Most of us know you as Gadget from This is England, there has been talk of one last film to bookend the series, would you like to reprise your role as Gadget and how do you see the character developing?

AE – Gadget and This is England have been a part of my life for 12 years now, which is just bonkers! I’d give my left arm to reprise the role one more time. I’d give both for twice more!

We saw a huge change in Gadget towards the end of ’90 and I feel like he was forced to grow up with what was going on with Kelly etc. He’s a big kid with a big heart but I think he knows how to “adult” when the time calls. I’d like to see him being a lot more grown up.

PN – Apart from This is England, what else have you been up to?

AE – I’ve done various films & TV projects and have had the chance to work with some amazingly talented people. TIE kick started my career 12 years ago and I’ve been lucky enough to have been working fairly regularly since.

I also do voice work which has become another passion and I write, produce & Direct short sketches for the social media magazine ‘UNILAD’ and am currently developing a sitcom.

PN – You have already had the opportunity to work with a number of great actors but if you could pick one actor today to work with who would it be and why?

AE – If I could pick one actor to work with? Tough one that. A few years ago I would of said Robin Williams, however I think it would have to be Tom Hanks. I grew up on his movies and still love everything he does.

PN – If you could only watch 3 films for the rest of your life what would they be?

AE – Wow just three, ok.

Forrest Gump, Back to the future PT 2 and Anchorman.

FG – is my favourite film of all time, its got everything Romance, War, ping pong.

BTTF 2 is just an absolute classic, I’d want the trilogy but I think I’d get by with part two alone.

Anchorman – I can watch that film on repeat now and never get bored.

PN – What do you think is the most impressive animal you could defeat (on a good day) in unarmed combat?

AE – I wouldn’t wanna say anything small and cute because that’s just bully tactics. On a really good day. If it 100% deserved it, I’d give a sloth a sly dig.

PN – A sloth? If ever there was a defenseless animal it’s a sloth

AE – Nah, have you seen the claws on them things!? Nasty!
