Channel 4 have announced that The Virtue, a new 4 part drama due for release in 2019 will see director Shane Meadows team up with Stephen Graham again.

Written by Meadows and Jack Thorne who also had a hand in This is England, the new series will see Graham play Joseph and will follow him on his journey to Ireland to confront his childhood spent in the care system.

If you watched the This is England series you will know that Meadows is not afraid to tackle difficult subject matter head on and The Virtue looks like it will follow this path. With Stephen Graham as the lead we can expect another powerful, and maybe even explosive performance that might make for difficult viewing at times.

The series will be shot on location in Sheffield, Liverpool and Belfast and will also star newcomer Niamh Algar, Angela’s Ashes Frank Laverty and Helen Behan who you might remember from This is England ’88 and This is England ’90.
